**UPDATE**

You guys. Your comments are amazing. Thank you so much. My to-read pile just grew to the size of Everest. A winner has been notified, but if I don’t hear back, I’ll pick another. Thank you thank you to everyone who commented. I’m so impressed with how much and how passionately everyone reads! Love, Rae

——————————————————————————————————————————

I just received advance readers copies for The Crown of Embers, which is a sequel to The Girl of Fire and Thorns that will be released in September. What’s a girl to do with such bounty? A giveaway, of course!

Embers is a much more romantic book than Girl. Slight spoiler: There is kissing. So, for a chance to win–and in honor of romance in young adult novels–please leave a comment telling me about your favorite literary romanceΒ so I can be sure it’s on my to-read list (doesn’t have to be YA!).

Sometime on Friday, (aka when I drag myself out of bed) I’ll do a random number generator thingy and pick a winner. I’ll accept comments here, on my Facebook post, and on my Goodreads feed.

This is what I’m giving away: A signed ARC of The Crown of Embers. A signed hardcover of The Girl of Fire and Thorns. AND, because I’m feeling very generous and because I want EVERYONE to read this book because it’s THAT GOOD, my precious, precious ARC of Veronica Roth’s amazing Insurgent, which comes out May 1.

Winner take all. INTERNATIONAL.

So, comment away! What literary romances are absolute must-reads for me?

    OMG! Awesome giveaway!! Thank you!

My favorite literary romance is Hazel and Augustus from John Green’s “The Fault In Our Stars.” (I want to cry thinking about it.) These two just captured my heart and soul and squeezed the life out of it. Their love story is genuine and real. It isn’t overdone or has a hint of phoniness. It’s quite perfect. It almost goes without saying that we all want and need an Augustus (or Hazel) in our lives.

Awesome giveaway! My favorite romances would have to be Puck and Sean in “The Scorpio Races” by Maggie Stiefvater, and probably Matt and Kate De Vries in “Airborn” and its sequels. Aly and Nawat Crow in “Trickster’s Choice” and “Trickster’s Queen” are great as well.

You should check out Tristan and Iseult! It’s one of my favorite romances and led the way for Romeo and Juliet. My favorite edition is the one by Joseph Bedier. It’s quite old, but my mom bought a copy for me several years ago and I loved it! Aside from that, the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier has long been a favorite. What can I say? I have a weakness for Irish myth and legend. πŸ™‚

Oh good one!! I love all of those books. I think Liadan and Bran may be my favorite but they were all good. One that I really love is Tom and Polly from “Fire and Hemlock” by Diana Wynne Jones. It’s a modern retelling of Tam Lin and also Thomas the Rhymer according to amazon.

If I could secure copies of both EMBERS and INSURGENT, I would finally have a shot at being popular!

My favorite literary romance? I kind of want to say The Time Traveler’s Wife, but that was a little sketchy, wasn’t it? I think I choose Will and Lyra from His Dark Materials.

Oh gosh, romance. I tend to read books with lots of death and violence, and any romance is just a nice side effect. BUT some of my favorite epic romances in books (that I can think of) would probably be Valek/Yelena in the Poison Study series by Maria V. Snyder, or going old school, (Bel)Garion/Ce’Nedra in the Belgariad/Mallorean by David Eddings, or….yeah, I’m drawing a lot of blanks right now. I love some romance, but very few make it onto my truly epic list.

Anyway, thanks for the contest, and sorry for the rambling!

My favorite romances? Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door, The Season, Between the Sea and Sky, Magic Under Glass and, of course, Pride and Prejudice. There’s tons more, but the romance isn’t nearly as prominent in those.

Very tough question and an awesome giveaway! My current favorite YA literary romance is the one between Taylor and Jonah in On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. I don’t want to spoil anything in case it’s a new book for you, but these two form a bond amidst a world of grief and one of my favorite lines in the book is: ‘I’m going to know him the rest of my life.’

What a gorgeous set of books! I’d have to pick a not-so-popular book for my recommendation: The Scarlet Pimpernel. I’ve read lots of classics, but this one’s on par with Emma and Pride & Prejudice when it comes to subtle, poignant romance.

Pardon me while I try to stop drooling at all of the pretty books.

Anyway, my favorite literary romances (I can’t choose just one) have to be classics, because it’s hard to deny the magic of Jane Austen. Of course, I’m sure you’ve read or at least considered reading Pride & Prejudice already. Instead, I offer up to you today E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View. Both the movie and the book are completely amazing. The love may not be as sweep you off your feet (in the book) as some, but it’s just so realistic. Something about it gets me every time.

I am such a sucker for romance, and so the idea of choosing ONE book to name is VERY DIFFICULT, RAE. So, okay, I’ll offer two: one is a swoony romance that makes my heart all fluttery, and the other is my favorite romance in a book but the book is not at all swoony.

Swoony romance: right now I would say my favorite Swoon would come from Katsa and Po from Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Just… wow. So many authors do it well, though, so it’s really hard to choose. A very close second would be Finnikin and Evangeline in Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta.

Non-swoony but OMG SO TRIUMPHANT: Would be She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb. He’s my favorite author, and has been since I was in college. This book is so hard and so wonderful, and Dolores’ journey through the whole book is heartwrenching. The ending feels real and right and … sigh. SUCH a good book.

See how I make it into three? I HOPE I AM NOT DQ’d. *gives you cookies*

I think the books of Cassandra Clare have wonderful romances in them. They’re YA books, but really addicting and loveable.

Such pretty pretty covers! I’d have to go with a classic and say Gone with the Wind for my favorite romance. I’m terrible at having to choosing favourites! My original answer would have involved saying a couple I’ve been shipping since the very beginning in Rachel Vincent’s amazing Soul Screamers series, but it’s a bit of spoiler for those who haven’t read the latest book… so I won’t answer with their names for now.

My favourite literary romances tend to be in paranormal/fantasy books because the stakes seem to be higher for them to be together compared to a contemporary novel. I’d probably go with choosing the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and the Chicagoland Vampires series by Chloe Neill. For contemporary recommendations, I’ve always loved Perfect You by Elizabeth Scott and Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! πŸ™‚

WOOHOO!! I’m hoping to win this one, because waiting for books I know I’m going to love KILLS me. Random number generator, look my way!! (blows on dice)

The romance that has always stuck in my head, not necessarily in a good way, but definitely in a defining way, is Heathcliffe and Catherine in Wuthering Heights. The intensity and passion were extremely appealing to me as a kid, but they also taught me the dangers of giving in to those emotions. Strangely, they taught me to be more rational in love, to look for people who were capable of making me feel happy instead of just making me feel.

Favorite positive role model couple? Lissar and Ossin, from Robin McKinleys Deerskin. They’re both imperfect, broken people. But they fix themselves. They take positive action towards becoming who they want to be, and becoming the type of partners they believe the other deserves. It’s a beautiful, but dark and disturbing story.

My favorite romance is between Katsa and Po in Graceling. Katsa is the exact opposite of so many lovesick teen girls in literature today. I think the best literary romances are the ones that start off a bit rocky. I hate (well, not *hate*, but it’s not my favorite) when stories have that “insta-love” bit. You know what I mean? My favorite romance novel is called Island of the Swans by Ciji Ware. It takes place in Scotland during the early 1800s. Its about Jane Maxwell Gordon, who falls in love with her childhood sweet heart, Thomas Fraser, but finds out he was killed in America so she marries another man, the Duke of Gordon. She later finds out Thomas was never killed. The characters are amazing and the Duchess of Gordon is by far one of my favorite female characters. As an added bonus this book is based on an actual woman, Jane who was one of the most influential woman of that time period.

Evie and Lend from Paranormal are adorable and sweet. Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester are so messed up and tragic and wonderful. Jane and Vincent from Shades of Milk and Honey were sweet and charming.

BUT my favorite would have to be Sophie and Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle. *sigh* Best. Book. Ever.

(ASIDE: I lovelovelove Girl of Fire and Thorns. It was wonderful! I can’t tell you how much I loved it without this comment becoming really long and including a lot of embarrassing fangirl squeeing and gushing on my part. Since I don’t think either of us want that, I’ll just say thank you for writing a heroine who was fat and beautiful and insecure and strong and capable. And I can’t wait for Crown of Embers!)

You know, this is going to be a bit unusual (maybe), but it’s Jacky Faber + Sailing Ships. I know, I know, technically the romance in the Bloody Jack series is between Jacky and Jaimy Fletcher, but let’s be honest – Jaimy’s not good for much other than a constant source of tension and drive to continue the story. It’s nice, but nothing like the passion Jacky has for her ships. πŸ˜‰

I’m only a little bit joking, too. I realized that a lot of the literary romances I love aren’t really romantic, or aren’t happy endings, or I don’t like them because of “romance” but because of the way the relationship works with the characters and shows growth – I mean, there’s NO WAY Catherine + Heathcliff is a happy romantic affair – it’s destructive and abusive and just horrible. But I really love that book. And I love Jane Eyre to pieces, but I can’t really say that the Jane + Rochester romance is a very good example – it’s also fraught with problems and not at all an ideal. (My next example is going even farther back in history to Eliza Haywood’s Love-letters on All Occasions, which has some great examples of romance from the 1740s, but, again, not really romantic? but I love them! Fantomina is also great, but totally not like a “romance” at all – i love it because it’s super feminist for the 1720s, at least how we think of the 1720s now.)

I’m super excited about Crown of Embers! I can’t wait to read it!

Wow, books I totally want! Thanks so much for the giveaway!

But how am I supposed to say just ONE? I’m gonna cheat and list a couple. :]

The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan–I love the fact that Annah ends up with Catcher. I never liked him with Gabry. And I love Annah’s badass tendencies. She’s my favorite heroine of the trilogy.
I feel like this should be fairly obvious: Peeta and Katniss, though not from The Hunger Games but from Mockingjay. I feel like their love is so much more real in that one.
Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre. LOVE THEM.

    Anyway. Thanks so much again!

Favorite romance…so hard to choose. I love Ash and Meghan in Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series and Dez and Kale in the Denazen series by Jus Accardo. I also absolutely love the couple of Finnick/Annie in the Hunger Games even though they were never on the forefront of the story. Their romance really touched me.

What an incredibly difficult question! haha. There are many loves I personally love in books but my favorite literary romances (I can’t seem to choose just the one) would have to be classics of Wuthering Heights, Tess of the D’urbervilles and Little Dorrit. Those titles may not be your necessary sweet romances or your general romantic storylines because they can be a little depressing at times but overall amazing . . . but with the loves displayed in those novels . . . the concept of love comes with a lot of sacrifices and consequences in the lengths you would go to protect that love and in those three titles there are many consequences.

    Thanks for the giveaway! *groupjump*

The Crown of Embers AND Insurgent? This may very well be the best giveaway ever!

My favorite literary romance…so hard to choose! For YA: anything by Meg Cabot (especially 1-800-Where-R-You series) and The Mortal Instruments/The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare (Clary and Jace! Will and Tessa!). In the mood for a tear-jerker? Any Nicholas Sparks book. The Last Song and A Walk to Remember are my personal favorites. And, of course, no favorite literary romance list would be complete without Pride and Prejudice!

Thanks! Can’t wait for Crown of Embers!

I highly recommend “North & South” and “Wives & Daughters,” both by Elizabeth Gaskell, who is the Victorian equivalent of Jane Austen (though Gaskell includes discussions of both industrialization and the lower classes in a really interesting way).

Or, if you’re looking for something current but still more literary, I loved “Heart’s Blood” by Juliet Marillier (a unique historical retelling of Beauty & the Beast) or “The Scorpio Races” by Maggie Steifvater.

I just have to say that “Girl of Fire and Thorns” was my absolute favorite read of 2011 and I have been recommending it to everyone I know. Thank you so much for writing such a strong, detailed novel about a truly beautiful woman.

Thanks for this giveaway, very exciting …

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares is possibly one of the best romances in literary history (at least in mine because I have not been fortunate enough to read everything the world has to offer). Daniel is gifted with the ability of “memory” allowing him to remember all his past lives when he is reborn, and he is able to recognize other souls from hist past lives. Lucy doesn’t know why she feels like she knows Daniel, but she is attracted to him despite the mystery.
This is a love story that spans centuries and continents and is literally never ending.

My favourite literary romance would have to be Megan and Ash’s romance in the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. As well as Helen and Lucas’ romance in Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. I love these romances because no matter what obstacles are in the couples way they overcome them together.

AHHH oh my gosh, this is the greatest giveaway!!! My favourite romance would be between Macy and Wes from Sarah Dessen’s The Truth About Forever. Poignant, realistic, and really gets to you.

Thanks alot for this opportunity! i recently read Eona by Alison Goodman and the romance between Prince Kygo and Eona is rocky, confusing and sweet altogether. It makes you really feel for Eona and her situation.

I absolutely ADORED The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer! The sexual tension there is INTENSE. Also Daughter of Smoke and Bone, both amazing books! πŸ™‚ Of course Divergent also has a really good romance story in it. John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars is a beautiful romantic book too. Poignant and hilarious, it has everything!

For classics, you have to read about Abelard and Heloise (Eloise). It’s very tragic. πŸ™‚

Hmm…I was trying to think of my favorite epic fantasy or supernatural romance, but I had too many conflicting thoughts. So I’m going to go with my favorite literary romance since I was eleven–Princess Mia Thermopolis and normal guy (genius) Michael Moscovitz from Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries series! Their story is epic and involves the invention of a robotic arm to do surgery!

I am pretty much a sucker for any of the romances created by Jane Austen. Every time I read Persuasion I always get a little nervous even though I know what is going to happen!

How very awesome of you for doing this giveaway! And I just have to say I am on edge waiting for Crown of Embers to come out: September 12th cannot come fast enough! Which it why the chance for an ARC is so amazing. (And I really loved The Girl of Fire and Thorns—it was the best book I’d read in a very very long time.)

    But enough drooling.

I’ve been sitting here for like ten minutes trying to think….hmmm….well I LOVE The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot (Michael and Mia!). That would probably be my first choice. The two Princesses of Bamarre and Ella Enchanted (the book, NOT the movie) I would put on there, too, just because they were the first romances I ever read…And then I HAVE to put Stephanie and Ranger on there from The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, and Charlie Davidson and Reyes from the Charlie Davidson series by Darynda Jones (first book is First Grave on the Right).

As for contemporary adult romances (well, the last two are also contemporary adult but for the sake of transitions), Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas is a must–there is literally nothing not to love about it.

And who could forget Four and Tris? NOONE, that’s who.

I hope this list helps, Rae, and thanks again!

My favorite literary romance would probably have to be Emma and Knightley (and I’m not just saying that because she’s my namesake!), and all Jane Austen for that matter. But I love a summery romancey Sarah Dessen novel as much as the next girl…

I think my favorite literary romance is A Discovery of Witches. It is so fun to read. I just started reading The Girl of Fire and Thorns and have to say I find it very entertaining. It was not what I expected at all. The book has definitely surpassed my expectations. I LOVE IT!!!

Well I’m super excited about this sequel to girl of fire and thorns! Some of my favorite YA romances are probably Mary and James in The Agency series, Fire and Brigan in Fire, Eragon and Arya in the Inheritance Cycle, Talia and Dirk in Arrow’s Fall, and Karou and Akiva in Daughter of Smoke and Bone. There are lots of books that I love that include beautifully written love stories but here are some of my very favorites! πŸ˜†

Favorite romance book is def. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE!!! I love the plot, characters, and how innocent their love is compared to today’s love. (if that makes any sense?) I also love Nicholas Spark’s books, I could lose myself in his books for hours and hours <3

Ah!! I LOVED LOVED LOVED reading The Crown Embers. My heart was literally in my throat at the end when Ximena spoke up. I literally yelled NO out loud. Sadly my passionate exclamtion stopped nothing=/ ahhh I cant wait for the next one. lol This is the problem with getting a New Release book and finishing it in one night, you have to wait an entire year for the next one. Ahh the anticipation!! lol

I think one of my fav romance pairing would be Nick and Payton from Shallow(A Going Under Novel) by Georgia Cates. Their love is that pure love, the type of love we all want to have.

I love the League series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. In it, there’s a lost prince/assassin, a ballerina princess, a famous thief who’s the son of an evil man, a man who may or may not be gay, his childhood fiancΓ©, a chef, a disowned ambassador, and many other fascinating people who are all different, and sarcastic. Also, the Dark-Hunter series by her is good (it has 24 books and is still being continued!). This one is full of different pantheons, different type of Weres (werewolves, werebears, bearweres, etc.). It’s also has a lot of Greek mythology and tales of Atlantis. It has a companion series about a 14 year old boy called the Chronicles of Nick. In that one, Nick is the bastard son of a stripper and a man in prison. His mother was his age when she had him and was turned out by her family. It’s about his story and how he found out about the paranormal world (zombies are so unexpected at times…).
I also recommend anything by Rick Riordan, and much of J. K. Rowling’s work.
I was honestly surprised when I found your book. I’ve only read The Girl Of Fire And Thorns so far and it’s been the first real book I’ve chosen of my own accord and actually liked. I couldn’t put it down and I can’t wait to find Crown of Embers.
    Sincerely,
    CheyRain
